What is this all about?
Simply put, we know that play is vital to EVERYONE. So, we build playgrounds where everybody can experience play to the fullest.
With a mission to inspire vital communities by creating innovative playgrounds for people of all abilities, the Summer(ish) Soiree is our annual fund-, friend-, and fun-raiser as we work to make this mission possible - and have some good fun while doing it.
How do I buy tickets?
Get your tickets online at http://harpersplayground.org/pages/summerish_soiree
Individual tickets are $99 or a table of 10 is $750.
Should I wear clothes? If so, what kind?
Yes, you should probably wear something. As far as what, we’ll leave it to you to interpret what our standard motto of “playfully dressy” means for your style.
For Cody, it means rocking a Harper’s Playground trucker hat with a suit. For Britt, it means Nikes can absolutely be paired with a cocktail dress. For our presenting sponsor crew from Gerding Edlen, it means decking out in Harper’s Playground green.
Keep in mind that we’re partying outdoors on the lawn, we’d love for you to check out our playground right next door, and weather could range from summer(ish) to fall(ish). So, comfortable footwear and layers/jackets are advised.
Where is the party at?
We’re partying at the park that is home to our flagship Harper’s Playground.
Arbor Lodge Park is at 2525 N. Dekum Street in North Portland.
How should I get there? Where should I park?
Get there any way you can!
There is plenty of parking on N. Dekum, to the south of the park, and on N. Bryant, to the north.
We also highly encourage carpooling and are big fans public transportation. Trimet’s #35 bus drops you off on Greeley just a block from the park.
Keep in mind that beer/wine is included with your event ticket. Please plan accordingly to travel with a designated driver or make arrangements to get home safely via Uber, public trans, or a nice walk, if you live in the neighborhood.
What should I expect?
Expect fun, expect to be inspired, and expect to be wined and dined.
The Summer(ish) Soiree will be a beautiful blend of socializing with friends new and old, inspirational speakers, a chance to go home with some seriously cool live auction and raffle packages, great food and drink, entertainment that you can participate in with a live karaoke band, and special activities for kids. Plus, we’ll have a short program where you’ll learn more about Harper’s Playground’s mission and how you can help to make our work possible.
Can I really bring my children? How much do their tickets cost?
Absolutely, you can!
After all, we build playgrounds. It should go without saying that we love kids. So, we’re thrilled to be able to invite them to join the fun and even have a few special activities planned. Plus, don’t forget that we’re partying right next to our flagship playground, which is sure to keep them highly entertained.
Please do register kids as guests online when you purchase tickets so we know how many people of all ages to expect. Kids tickets are sliding scale, with a suggested $25 donation each.
When does registration close? / Do I have to buy my ticket beforehand?
Online registration closes at midnight on Wednesday September 21.
We highly encourage you to register online early to let us know how many mouths to feed and chairs to set out, to make the entrance line flow smoothly, and to mitigate Cody and Britt’s event day anxiety. But, we will be prepared to accommodate those who show up and purchase a ticket night of. You’ll just have to be patient while we build you a chair out of nearby tree limbs.
Will there be food and drink?
Of course! And plenty of it. Included in the price of your ticket are a selection of appetizers, beer and wine, entrees, and desserts. Come hungry. It’s going to be delicious!
Note that we will have veggie-friendly and gluten-free options, as well.
Do you really want me to sing karaoke?
YES! Absolutely. What fun is a karaoke party without brave, fun souls jumping onstage to belt it out?! Take a look at Karaoke from Hell’s song list and come prepared to join the fun and to enjoy performances by your friends and neighbors.
We have faith in your musical talents! And, we have a few special guest singers lined up, too.
How close to Harper’s Playground will the party be?
Right next to it! In fact, you’ll be able to see and hear people at play right from the party and we encourage attendees of all ages to check out our playground. Here’s a map of our party’s layout. You can see the playground right behind the stage.
Do I have to arrive on time? And do I have to stay until 10pm?
Yes, please. And kinda.
We do appreciate your prompt arrival. In fact, we’ve moved the official door opening to 6:30pm and would love for guests to arrive between 6:30-7pm so that everyone is inside the venue and ready for the party to start. Food, drinks, and entertainment will begin right away and then we have a concise program planned from about 8-8:45pm. Afterwards, we’re pretty sure you’ll want to stick around for more karaoke fun and to see if you’ve won a raffle prize.
Do I have to leave at 10pm? And where is the after party?
The Summer(ish) Soiree officially ends at 10pm, when we’ll need to shut down and wrap up stage, food, and drink service. But, the park itself does remain open until 12:01am if you want to keep playing.
Plus, while there’s no official after party, The Old Gold, our sponsor bar and longtime Harper’s Playground supporters, is less than a mile away on N. Killingsworth. There’s a good chance Cody will be there taking shots and he always loves company!
What am I likely to win? / Do I have to be present to win?
We have seven incredible live auction and raffle packages, including:
An Ivan McLean art sculpture
A “Staycation” complete with two tickets to the Portland Craft Beer Festival, a one-night hotel stay, and breakfast for two at Three Degrees Restaurant
A TEDxPortland experience including four VIP tickets and a bundle of exclusive TEDxPortland gear.
An exclusive sailing experience with our very own Cody Goldberg and sailboat captain George Kapllani.
A Timbers experience including two tickets, a chance to meet the original Timber Jim, a slab from the Timber’s game log, and a 2016 team-signed jersey.
Tickets, backstage passes, and a trip to see Ben Harper at any one of his 2017 live shows.
A classic, 1976 blue-flecked, golden Cadillac.
You don’t have to be present to win, because that would be illegal, but we do hope you ARE present. It makes it way easier to celebrate with you.
Are you really raffling off a 1976 Gold Cadillac?
We are really raffling off a 1976 Gold Cadillac. And raffle tickets are just $25.
The only caveat is that the timing of the drawing depends on ticket sales. We’ve allocated just 500 raffle tickets, giving you some pretty great odds. We’ll pull the winning ticket once all are sold, which could happen at the soiree or could continue on throughout the fall.
Will I have a reserved seat?
Yes. Sorta. Anyone who has purchased a ticket in advance or is a guest of a table host will have an assigned table. But, our soiree is about fun and mingling, so use your reserved table as your “home base” while you feel free to roam and network with our other wonderful guests.
Where does my ticket money go? / How much of my ticket is tax deductible?
To build more playgrounds!
Half of your ticket price covers the cost of putting on the party. The other $50 is tax deductible and goes directly to Harper’s Playground’s mission, helping us to develop increasingly more inclusive, creative, engaging playgrounds in our revolutionary model.
Harper’s Playground has become SO much more than one playground. We may be small yet, but we are mighty, we are innovative, and our momentum is ever growing. Your support will help us to bring an inclusive playground to each of Portland’s quadrants by 2020 AND to help countless widespread communities to develop inclusive playgrounds of our own.
We know our goals are grand. We also know that, with you support, they realistic through the vision laid out in our five-year strategic plan. While the detail of this plan doesn’t fit concisely into a FAQ, we’d happily tell you more about it and the work that your support specifically funds. Feel free to give us a call and/or watch out for our upcoming newsletters as we share our progress.
What if I have more questions that you didn’t cover?
If you’ve met Cody and Britt, you know that we both love to talk - both in general and particularly about all things Harper’s Playground. Feel free to give us a call or shoot us an email. We’ll happily put your mind at ease about any questions or concerns you may have.
